What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a term that covers a wide range of safe, natural and effective treatment methods that have evolved in China over thousands of years. These include Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chinese Massage, Cupping, Guasha, Moxibustion, Dietary Therapy and Lifestyle Advice. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are usually employed as the major treatment methods with the remaining tequniques being employed to support and enhance the treatment outcomes. The treatment method selected may involve one or a combination of the above depending on the presenting condition and will be tailored to each individual.

The body is a complex organism in which the slightest imbalances, whether emotional or physical, can potentially cause both minor and major health problems. The mind and body share a close relationship which is often left unaddressed in Western Medicine. TCM is a holistic approach to healing that concentrates on bringing the whole body into a balanced state physically, mentally and emotionally by stimulating the body’s own self-healing mechanisms. Many people suffer from problems that may be unexplainable according to western medicine such as dizziness, nausea, bloating and pain. TCM can often help alleviate these symptoms, treat the underlying problem and bring the body back into equilibrium.

A consultation, diagnosis and treatment plan is tailored to each individual and generally built upon several key diagnostic methods. These usually involve:

Observation Observation of the skin, eyes, complexion and tongue
Questioning As a holistic medicine the practitioner may ask you questions about your body that might not initially appear to be directly related to your problem. The body is a complex organism in which everything is connected. These questions are necessary to obtain a thorough understanding of your condition and will assist the practitioner in identifying the root cause of the symptoms that may be responsible for your discomfort
Palpation Palpation of different areas of the body including acupoints, as well as feeling the wrist pulse
